In continuation with the trend set in 2021 with the DigiIntermediaries Bootcamp Fak’ugesi African Digital Innovation Festival & Wits School of the Arts have organised the Moving the Compass forum. The forum is scheduled to take place on the 17th and 18th of October 2022. It caters to intermediaries in the digital creative industries in Africa with a focus on digital animation, digital gaming and immersive media as well as government agencies and industry bodies aimed at the development of the digital creative industries.
The aim of the forum is to have African intermediaries come together for two days to decide ‘Who Sets the Compass’ and ‘Who Steers the Domain’. It is designed to maximize network development and engage key regional intermediary concerns. The hybrid event will take place online and in Johannesburg at Tshimologong Innovation Precinct as part of the Fak’ugesi Festival 2022 dubbed #FromNowOn.
Ahead of the session is a wonderful discussion from Day 2 of the festival which featured among other things an engrossing conversation about the value of intermediaries to nascent creative industries.
Day 1 of the forum will focus on the question ‘Who sets the compass?’ On this day the forum intends to address intermediary actions, roles and challenges that come with the assumed roles in the African ecosystem of digital creativity. It will also explore the role that governments and industry representative bodies take, and how the intermediaries on the ground negotiate this landscape and find support. The session will end with a phygital speed-dating networking event.
Day 2 of the forum will focus on the question ‘Who steers the domain?’ On this day the forum intends to challenge the landscape that intermediaries navigate in research, business intelligence and digital platforms in regional and diasporic engagement and development. The sessions will start with the interim presentation of the mapping and research that was done on Digital Creative Industry Intermediaries in Africa. After the presentation, the intermediaries present will get to share what they intend to do with the research. The forum will end with a celebration and the intermediary community’s next steps.
