The African games industry reached a new milestone this week with the launch of the first-ever Afro Game Showcase, a broadcast event dedicated entirely to games made by African creators and the wider diaspora. Streamed live on YouTube at 7 p.m. UTC, the showcase was hosted in both French and English by Jennifer Lufau and Mickaël Newton, co-founders of the cultural consultancy Narratify, who built the event as a platform to bring African storytelling and game design to a global audience.
In total, 22 games were unveiled during the broadcast, spanning PC, console, and mobile platforms, with 14 of those titles confirmed for release on Steam. The lineup brought together both established and emerging studios from across the continent and its diaspora, including familiar names such as Red Raketa’s Kalanoro, set in Madagascar, and Mandinga Games’ Black Sailors, a Brazilian production drawing on Afro-Brazilian heritage.
Among the night’s standout reveals was Go North from Nigerian studio Gazuntype, a cozy narrative adventure built around richly designed mazes, where solving the labyrinth grants the player’s deepest wish. The game is confirmed for release on July 28, 2026, on both Steam and Xbox Series consoles. Jamaican developer Hemiogenic Interactive also drew attention with Street Boy, a heartfelt story following a young boy named Arlinton in Princetown, Jamaica, whose wooden cart becomes a symbol of community pride as he navigates daily struggles and stands up for his neighborhood.
Nigerian studio VCD presented new details on The InBetween, a fast-paced 2D Metroidvania set in a world overtaken by a mysterious infection, where players must make difficult choices that shape both their character’s fate and the future of the dying world around them. The game is targeting a late 2026 release on Steam. Closing out the night’s major reveals, Brazilian studio Odu Studios showed new gameplay footage from Odu: Ancestral Nexus, an action RPG rooted in the Brazilian diaspora that invites players to awaken ancestral memory and answer the call of the Orixás, blending mythology, identity, and futurism into a single spiritual journey. It is also slated for a late 2026 Steam launch.
Beyond the headline reveals, the showcase’s full Steam lineup reflected a wide range of genres and tones. Cozy and family-oriented titles included Morocco’s Mathpunk Chronicles and France’s Kitty Haven, while action-adventure offerings ranged from South Africa’s Feather’s Edge to Ghana’s Karmzah, Tunisia’s Kopno: Blightfall, and Nigeria’s Rasta Santa and Closerlook VR: Oldways. On the puzzle and strategy side, the showcase featured the USA’s Oh!Ware alongside Brazil’s Black Sailors: Bay of All Saints.
Mobile and itch.io releases rounded out the showcase, with titles such as Zambia’s Toys All Race, Kenya’s Riziki and Bongoman, South Africa’s Soleil and Grimoire Limbo, Algeria’s Encrypt, and Nigeria’s Circuit Chakula and The Lonely Architect all receiving attention during the broadcast.
