The 2026 edition of the Playful Obscura Residency returns to Accra with a renewed commitment to supporting experimental artistic practices at the intersection of games, art and technology. Designed as a focused three-week residency running from 13 April to 1 May, the initiative recognises the growing importance of playful media and arthouse games within the broader contemporary art landscape, particularly across Africa’s rapidly evolving creative scene.
The open call runs from 16 February to 13 March, inviting applications from artists based on the continent who are working in playful media and arthouse game development. A dedicated online Q&A session, scheduled for 4 March, will provide prospective applicants with the opportunity to learn more about the residency’s goals, structure and expectations. Participation in the Q&A requires prior registration.
Playful Obscura is rooted in the understanding that games and interactive systems are no longer confined to entertainment alone. They are increasingly recognised as powerful artistic tools capable of addressing social, political and cultural themes while pushing the boundaries of form and authorship. By hosting two artists simultaneously in Accra, the residency fosters dialogue, collaboration and peer exchange while still allowing each participant to maintain the independence of a solo creator.
Support during the residency is deliberately concentrated to match its intensive format. Each selected artist will receive a production budget of up to €1,000 to realise their approved project, alongside a €300 stipend to cover meals and personal expenses throughout the stay. Dedicated living accommodation will be provided, designed to encourage informal interaction and community-building between residents. A shared workspace will serve as the primary site for ideation and development, offering an environment conducive to experimentation and critique.
Beyond material support, Playful Obscura emphasises engagement. Residents will be encouraged to draw inspiration from Accra’s dynamic urban environment and to connect with local creative communities. Opportunities for open studios, workshops and feedback sessions will form part of the programme, reinforcing the residency’s commitment to exchange rather than isolation.
Selection for the 2026 edition will be carried out by an advisory panel comprising representatives from A MAZE., Leti Arts and Goethe-Institut. The jury will assess applications based on artistic merit, conceptual strength and the feasibility of developing the proposed project within the three-week timeframe. Particular attention will be paid to how each applicant’s practice aligns with the residency’s focus on playful media and arthouse game development.
Applications for Playful Obscura Residency Ghana 2026 close on 13 March, with selected artists set to begin their residency in Accra on 13 April. Applications can be done here.
