In the first of a new series revisiting game releases from unheralded African game developers called Looking Back we take a microscope to The Dark Occult. A first release from Moroccan indie studio RYM Games that released in 2018 to relative success.

Released on September 25th 2018, The Dark Occult released to mixed to positive reviews and was marketed as a psychological driven horror game that puts players in a constant state of anxiety that crescendos into raw panic and terror.

Whilst it released in an age of relative calm with only a handful of major PC releases that included the final season of TellTales The Walking Dead and Valkyria Chronicles 4 re-release on PC, it still held its own in its first month.

What added to its remarkable feat, was that this was the first and only shipped PC game from the North African outfit. The studio has been quiet since The Dark Occult shipped although it definitely made an impression on a slew of content creators as well as built up a decent fanbase in the United States and China.

The Dark Occult is available to buy on Steam.
