Cameroon-based Noohkema Game Studios has released Orbix: Adinkra Resonance, a contemplative mobile puzzle game that combines spherical puzzle mechanics with the visual and philosophical heritage of Adinkra symbols from Akan culture.

Developed in Unity, the Android title revolves around an interactive sphere populated with interconnected symbols. Players rotate and manipulate the sphere, identify chains of matching symbols and create combinations that generate “resonance” effects, charging the sphere and helping them progress through a series of increasingly complex challenges.

The current version features five playable chapters, with further chapters already in development. A central ambition behind Orbix is to move beyond the use of African cultural references as purely visual decoration.

The game draws on Adinkra, a system of visual symbols historically associated with the Akan peoples of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. Individual symbols can communicate concepts, values, philosophical ideas and proverbs, touching on themes including knowledge, resilience, unity, transformation and learning from the past.

Rather than presenting these symbols simply as an aesthetic layer, Noohkema has incorporated them into the game’s progression and collectible systems. As players encounter symbols during their journey, they can unlock Adinkra cards containing additional information about their meanings and cultural context.

One of the concepts that has particularly influenced the project is Sankofa, commonly associated with the idea of returning to the past to retrieve knowledge that can help shape the future.

“With Orbix, we wanted to explore what happens when African cultural heritage becomes part of the actual game system rather than just the visual identity of a game,” said Michel Nkuindja, Founder and Creative Director of Noohkema Game Studios. Adinkra symbols already carry centuries of ideas, philosophy and meaning. The challenge was to translate some of that richness into something interactive, accessible and enjoyable even for players discovering these symbols for the first time.”

Noohkema Game Studios describes the current release as the beginning of an evolving project rather than a finished endpoint. Additional chapters are already in development, with the studio planning to introduce new gameplay mechanics and new ways of interacting with the Orbix sphere.

The project began as a focused mobile production exploring how culturally rooted ideas could be translated into accessible contemporary game mechanics.

The studio now sees the concept as potentially extending beyond Adinkra. Its longer-term ambition is to explore how Orbix could become a framework for interactive interpretations of other African symbolic systems, writing traditions and forms of cultural knowledge.
