Maliyo Games Partners with the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos and Global Game Jam to host the ‘GameUp Africa Jam for Democracy,’ Tackling Disinformation Through Game Development.

GameUp Africa, powered by Maliyo Games, a leading pan-African mobile developer, is thrilled to announce its partnership with the U.S. Consulate General Lagos and Global Game Jam to present the first-ever GameUp Africa Jam for Democracy. This initiative invites storytellers, game developers, artists, sound designers, and civic activists from Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana to explore the nexus between democracy and disinformation through innovative game design and development.

“Digital technologies, like gaming, play an important role in empowering and connecting people,” said U.S. Consul General Will Stevens. “By partnering with Maliyo Games through the GameUp Africa Jam for Democracy, we aim to harness the power of gaming to tackle global challenges like disinformation and reinforce democratic principles around the world.”

The Jam for Democracy, running from December 9th, 2024, to December 20th, 2024, will inspire developers of all skill levels to create innovative and thought-provoking games that spark discussions around disinformation and its effect on democratic governance. Participants will be mentored by industry experts and can showcase their work, win prizes, and get post-event support for the top game submissions. Applications close on 4th December, 2024.

“We, at Maliyo Games, are excited to launch ‘The GameUp Africa Jam for Democracy’ at a time when disinformation online is quickly becoming an issue that is affecting us all. We appreciate the support of our partners in helping make this happen,” said Hugo Obi, Founder of Maliyo Games.

This partnership underscores GameUp Africa’s commitment to nurturing game development talent across the continent, providing developers with tools, resources, and platforms to express their creativity. As an initiative powered by Maliyo Games, GameUp Africa continues to drive its mission of empowering African developers through boot camps, jams, and mentorship opportunities.
