Kenyan Urban Gurus is a game development studio founded by Brian Njenga and Ian Okinda. Committed to pushing the boundaries of storytelling in video games. The Mara Witch is their first commercial project.
The project has been in development for three years and marks a significant achievement for the Kenyan duo reflecting their deep passion for storytelling and their commitment to showcasing the richness of African culture and heritage.
For us at Urban Gurus, The Mara Witch is more than just a game; it’s a testament to the importance of representationand cultural authenticity in the gaming industry. We believe that everyone deserves to see themselves reflected in the games they play, and with “The Mara Witch,” we aim to shine a spotlight on African history, culture, and mythology.

Through research and attention to detail, they have crafted a world that is both immersive and authentic, inviting players to explore the vibrant landscapes and encounter the rich tapestry of characters and creatures inspired by African folklore using an overhead isometric camera reminiscent of the most recent Larian titles.
“The Mara Witch” is not just about entertaining players; it’s about empowering them to learn, to explore, and to appreciate the diversity of the world around them. We hope that by experiencing the wonders of precolonial Africa through our game, players will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the continent’s rich heritage.
The studio is gearing up for a closed Beta with the game now available to follow and wishlist on Steam. The game is set for a Q1 2025 release for PC.
