The following text is a guest contribution from Salem Gaaya, an up and coming writer recounting their first visit to Decembers Playtopia event.

The curtains fell on Playtopia 2023 with festival director Dominique Gawlowski declaring, “And this is a wrap. Playtopia 2023 is over.” As the echoes of this proclamation faded, attendees reflected on the unique experience offered during the two-day festival. The third edition of Playtopia unfolded on a stage where 37 accomplished speakers delved into the realms of storytelling, game mechanics, marketing, and the world of indie games. Over two days, this captivating conference not only filled the room to near capacity but also equipped attendees with invaluable game design and development insights.

Speakers not only captured the audience’s attention but also shared game design and development hacks, offering a wealth of knowledge. These talks served as crucial pieces for game developers and designers, honing their skills and fostering a player-focused approach. From maximizing game revenue to mastering the best marketing practices in the gaming industry, the conference covered the gamut.

While around 100 enthusiasts were engrossed in the conference talks, others explored the games showcased in the “Super Friendship Arcade.” What made the arcade phenomenal was the sheer variety of game types, ensuring that every attendee could find the perfect game. From humorous and puzzling games to the thrill of skateboarding or navigating a boat, engaging in combat or trying their hand at virtual fishing – the options were diverse. Attendees could enjoy solo adventures, team up in duos, or dive into group games, catering to a wide spectrum of preferences.

The global inclusivity of the arcade was evident not only in its variety but also in its representation. South Africa stood proudly alongside Kenya, Ethiopia, and even Sweden and Denmark from Europe. The arcade became a melting pot of gaming experiences, transcending geographical boundaries and providing a unique opportunity for attendees to explore the rich tapestry of indie games from around the world. This inclusive approach not only showcased the creativity of African developers but also celebrated the global collaboration and diversity present in the gaming community.

The audience engagement during the conference talks was more than just attentive listening; it was super cool. Attendees not only absorbed the insights from the speakers but also created an atmosphere that put the speakers at ease, fostering a sense of collaboration and shared passion for gaming.

In the arcade, this spirit of camaraderie continued as attendees made new friendships and enjoyed the games together. Whether navigating the challenges of a puzzling game or teaming up in a virtual adventure, the arcade became more than a showcase of games; it was a social hub where connections were forged through shared experiences. This communal aspect of the festival extended beyond the digital realm, creating lasting memories and reinforcing the idea that gaming is not just a solitary activity but a communal celebration. Even in the worst-case scenario, the festival offered delectable food and drinks, and Studio Bolland provided a cinematic escape with movies and popcorn. The Super Friendship Arcade wasn’t just a gaming showcase; it was a cultural exchange where individuals connected through the universal language of games.

An art gallery was present, boasting a diverse range from Old-School handcrafted art to cutting-edge exhibits like Lume real-time, interactive light art, and Virtual Reality displays such as Jared Jestr’s VR Gallery.

Production Coordinator Anja Venter revealed a notable attendance of 750 individuals at the festival, contributing to the selection of Playtopia 2023’s #1 game from over 60 contenders. The first-ever Playtrophia Award was clinched by HASTE: Broken Worlds from Sweden, emphasizing Playtopia’s commitment to showcasing and connecting creators not only across African nations but also across continents.

In the fusion of art and gaming, Playtopia 2023 achieved unprecedented success. The festival, organized by Free Lives and the dedicated committee, transcended borders and became a global platform for creators. Playtopia not only informed and inspired but also served as a testament to the boundless possibilities when art and gaming unite.
