The term potential has been loosely tossed around the African games industry in recent years. From a landmass, population and improving infrastructure perspective, that has held some weight.

However, a lot of that promise whilst still in the ascendancy is very much relegated to smatterings of countries across the continent as opposed to an even spread of growth. This report seeks to dive a little deeper into those countries and their performance on the PC front – Steam being the primary focus.

South Africa is not only a huge producer of the medium, but also one of the larger consumers of the medium on the continent, when it comes to the PC platform.

On the development front, the cadence of releases is on the rise with South Africa once again leading the way. However, North African representation is strong with Nigerian developers having to overcome significant administrative hurdles to even get their games on the platform.

Unity is a staple of the local game development community with Unreal, Godot and Game Maker making considerable inroads.

On the revenue side, a handful of games have cracked the $1 million milestone although a sizable percentage have some way to go to reach $5 thousand in lifetime revenue.

With a few score of titles set for release from African developers in the coming years, on Steam and consoles one can expect the growth of the industry to be reflected in unit sales, revenue and more.
